Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced his government was abandoning plans to go through with a controversial abortion reform bill spearheaded by Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardón who announced his resignation over the decision. Spanish pro-life platform Derecho a Vivir (Right to Life) has  organised several protests across Spain in which thousands of Spaniards voiced their support for more restrictive legislation. Spokeswoman Gador Joya told The Spain Report by telephone that Mr. Rajoy “is a traitor who doesn’t deserve the vote”.

The Human Dimension Implementation Meeting of the Organisation of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has taken  place  in Warsaw from 22 September to 3 October. The Observatory on Intolerance against Christians in Europe is present and intervenes on topics of tolerance and freedom of conscience and religion. In her intervention at the  Working Session 14 on Fundamental Freedoms, Barbara Vitucci stated:  “It is a moral obligation for everyone to act according to his conscience. ‘Conscientious objection’ is therefore  not a ‘privilege’ the legal order confers on its subjects, but a basic human freedom.”

Parents have the greatest rights and the greatest responsibility in the education of their children. State institutions should assist them in this task; schools must seek the cooperation of parents and should not in any case artificially displace the rights of children and the rights of parents by imposing on the children an education contrary to the one they receive from their parents.

In this context and aiming to provide governments, parents and civil society with a tool which may help guarantee parental rights, Profesionales por la Ética is promoting the generalization of the NOTIFICATION FOR CONSENT from parents to their children’s school. It is like a Parental Pin.

The notification requests that the school provides parents with the necessary prior information on any subject, lecture, workshop or activity that may refer to a moral issue and, in particular, those related to issues of an affective-sexual nature so they can properly evaluate whether to grant their consent for their children to attend such school activity or not.

The implementation of such a form in schools would certainly guarantee parental rights, freedom of education and conscience and religious freedom.

Profesionales por la Ética has addressed to all Spanish MEPs to encourage them to commit themselves to promoting Family friendly policies in all areas of EU competence through the implementation of Family mainstreaming. And we have asked them to support the reconstitution of the European Parliament Intergroup on Family, Rights of the Child, Solidarity between Generations, Active Ageing, and Demographic Future in the EU for the new legislative term 2014-2019 as a first essential step. The Intergroup is today the only structure within the EU institutions that is solely focused on the needs of families.

La Manif pour Tous held a successful massive demonstration last October 5th in Paris in defense of marriage and children. It was attended by 500.000 people. Profesionales por la Ética was also there. You can read more about it here.

Profesionales por la Ética has joined an important initiative Voice of the Family. Voice of the Family is an initiative of Catholic laity from major pro-life/pro-family organisations. We have formed to offer our expertise and resources before, during and after the Extraordinary Synod on the Family. Learn more about Voice of the Family here.

Thanks a lot for getting involved and spreading this Newsletter!

Kind regards,
